Deployments- do mechanics get put in contact along with the infantry or do you stay in base and work?

Hello, I'm wondering for deployments, do mechanics get put in contact along with the infantry as mechanics/soldiers or do you stay in base and work? I mean like front line, patrols or support etc. Thank you

This is a difficult question to answer due to the different types of roles Mechanics can undertake. There are the kinds that do their work further from the front line repairing vehicles and equipment and there are the recovery mechanics whose job it is to recover damaged vehicles from where they were damaged/broke down/lost mobility. Recovery mechanics can be expected recover vehicles under fire should the need arise. Every combat unit will have associated REME support to ensure all their kit and equipment is maintained.
