I've seen people explaining you get two choices during regiment selection at Sandhurst, but are you allowed to only pick one? I'm interested in the ETS, but they don't seem to have any regiments within their branch, so would I have to pick a regiment in another branch as my second option or could I solely choose ETS?
Thanks for your question, the Regimental Selection Board (RSB) process at RMAS can sometimes be a bit confusing.
In about week 10 of the junior term, after being introduced to all the career options in the army, you will pick two choices that you would like to visit in the junior and intermediate terms. If you pick Army Air Corps pilot or the Intelligence Corps you can take them as a third option because they both have selection events you must pass.
You are selecting capbadges, not regiments, so you couldn't pick 1 Rifles and 2 Rifles as your choices - it would just be the Rifles as one of your selections. You will go through an additional selection process after being accepted in to a capbadge to find out where in the organisation you will work in your first posting.
Everyone must take two choices to the RSB in the first week of the senior term, even if one of your choices is a clear favourite. This is because the capbadge you'd like to go to might not select you. You will be competing for a place against other officer cadets as a capbadge can interview up to twice as many candidates as they have places for, so you potentially have a 50/50 chance of getting your chosen role.
You might also find that your preferences change as you go through RMAS as you find out more about them and yourself. Visits are really important for finding out if the job is right for you. For many capbadges, it is also a chance for them to assess if you are a good fit, and you may be deselected as a consequence of this. In this case you would need to find another option as your second RSB choice so I always encourage OCdts to intimately know about four capbadges, just in case you need to make another choice.
I strongly encourage doing as many visits as you are allowed before you get to Sandhurst so you can make the most informed decision possible, and keep an open mind on arrival. You get these through your Candidate Support Manager but you can contact capbadges directly. The ETS mailbox for example is AGCRHQ-ETSOfficerRecruiting@mod.gov.uk.
Good luck with your choice.
