After foundation training you will go into your General Duties Medical Officer role, usually for 3 years (which will include your commissioning course and your postgraduate medical officer course). Towards the end of your time as a GDMO you will apply for specialty training.

Each year the Army will produce a list of how many jobs in each specialty training programme there are available. This can vary significantly, but there is usually always something in general practice, emergency medicine, anaesthetics, psychiatry, general surgery, trauma and ortho, and general medicine. Other smaller specialities may have the occasional job, but not every year (eg radiology).

Occasionally doctors will do an additional year as a GDMO if they are unsuccessful with their specialty training application on the first attempt.
