Is it the right move for my career?

Anonymous asked a question to Claire W.

I’ve worked in bars my whole life but have qualifications in health and social care. A lot of my family are in the army and I want to do something that matters and makes a change. I have a lot of work to get there but I want to do it. I’m 22 and I feel like I’m too old and I’ve missed that opportunity. Is it the right move? And what sector do you recommend?

It's a good career choice: You'll gain transferable skills and qualifications, personal development, and have opportunity to apply your trade worldwide and in demanding environments.

You can join as a regular soldier up until you're 36, and as a reservist officer until you're 48, so 22 is not too old. With only GCSEs under my belt, I joined at 26 years old having worked in bars since I was 19, and I wasn't the eldest in my Company during Basic Training.

In broad terms, there are 7 sectors, or 'career streams':

    • Combat
    • Engineering
    • Logistics & Support
    • Medical
    • Intelligence
    • Comms & IT
    • HR, Finance & Support
    • Music.

I would encourage you to have a look at each, there may be something you hadn't previously considered that takes your fancy. One of the reasons I chose Logistics & Support because of the job availability when I eventually leave the Army, but you should take your own goals into consideration.
