hi im thinking of applying for the army but i just don't no what to do in the army or what's a good roll do you have any advice and the applying process thanks kaiden
Hi Kaiden, no worries at all, feeling like that is really common, so you’re not alone.
If you’re thinking about joining the Army but don’t know what role to choose, the first thing I’d say is don’t panic about having it all figured out straight away. A lot of people join with only a rough idea, and the Army is actually very good at helping you find where you fit best. Start by thinking about what you enjoy or what you’re good at, things like being hands‑on, working as part of a team, fitness, fixing things, problem‑solving, leadership, or learning a trade. There are roles ranging from infantry and combat roles to engineering, logistics, medical, intelligence, signals, and even working with animals.
A good step is to go on the British Army website and complete the Role Finder questionnaire. It matches your interests, strengths, and qualifications to roles that might suit you, which gives you a solid starting point. Speaking to an Army Careers Adviser is also really useful they’ll explain different roles honestly, answer questions, and help you understand what each job actually involves day to day.
As for the application process, it usually starts online, then you’ll have medical checks, a fitness assessment, and an assessment centre where they look at things like teamwork, problem‑solving, and physical ability. They’re not just looking for the “strongest” people they want motivation, effort, and the right attitude. You don’t need to be perfect at the start; training is designed to build you up.
My advice would be: do some research, ask questions, keep an open mind about roles you might not have considered, and focus on what would challenge and motivate you. The Army offers structure, opportunities to progress, and qualifications that can set you up for the future. If you want, tell me a bit about what you enjoy, what you’re good at, or what you definitely don’t want to do, and I can suggest some roles that might suit you.
Regards
Matt
