I am currently undecided between working my way up to NCO and applying for an army bursary. I would like to work on the ground, in the field for as long as possible and would really appreciate any guidance on this matter.
That's a good question but it is difficult to give a definitive answer. It really depends on what bit of the army you hope to join. Some parts spend much more time in the field than others, including their officers.
Up to Captain is considered the more tactical roles, such as platoon commanding, but Majors and Colonels can also lead in the field and operate out of command vehicles when on exercises and operations so you could spend years as an officer still finding yourself doing time in the field. Even senior officers will be in the field on major operations.
Equally, some NCOs find themselves in the office more often, depending on their job, so the best thing to do is to ask the recruiters for the capbadges you are interested in for the most honest response.
