What sort of careers and pathways are available within accounting and finance in the British Army?

Ben R. asked a question to Josh S.

I am currently training as an ACA chartered accountant within the audit and accounting firm. Post qualifying as a chartered accountant. I am interested to see what role possibilities are open to me within the British Army and the pathway and training I would take? Many thanks, Ben

Thank you for reaching out with your question. The natural fit for your qualification and interest in the British Army is a role in Staff and Personnel Support. With your qualification as a chartered accountant you might find yourself best suited to an officer role.

Day-to-day life in the AGC(SPS) is incredibly varied, but at its core it’s about looking after people, information, and resources within a unit. You’ll typically be working as part of a small HR/admin team embedded in a regiment or unit, supporting both soldiers and officers.

    A normal day can include:

    • Managing personnel records (postings, leave, career)
    • Ensuring soldiers are paid correctly and receive the right allowances
    • Advising commanders on staffing, welfare, and readiness
    • Working with data and systems to support decision-making
    • Supporting exercises or deployments (which can involve working in the field)

No two days are exactly the same, and roles can range from steady office-based work in the UK to supporting operations overseas.

Hope that helps and good luck with your training.

    Josh
